Teaching basic skills to children with disabilities

The project will deal with the improvement of staff members' competence levels in working with students with different types of disabilities as well as with improving the tolerance level of mainstream students in accepting students with disabilities (inclusion). There will be 5 major participants in the program, who will act as learning providers for the rest of the staff members (30 staff members in total). The participants chosen are staff members either already working with children with special needs or are mainstream teachers who would like to be able to offer more to their students who have special educational or other needs. Upon each course completion, there will be staff meetings during which, the participants will present the learning outcomes of the courses. In addition, lessons will be available for other staff members to observe, in order to have hands on experience of all the new teaching methods acquired by the participants from the training courses. There will be four training courses during which the participants will improve their competence level in teaching children with special needs, mainstream students with learning difficulties and increasing the tolerance level of mainstream students toward the children with disabilities within the school community. Specific projects will be carried out in order to accomplish the above goals. Description of the results: Improvement in teaching skills and methods for the participants and other staff members, Improvement in the social skills of students with disabilities, Improvement in the learning of basic skills of students with disabilities, Increase of the students motivation to explore and learn, Reduction of the stress of going to school with a person with disabilities Reduction of negative behaviors. Long term benefits: Increase of tolerance for people with disabilities. Decrease of school drop-out due to learning difficulties.
