Teacher Development/ English in Primary Schools
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are a small primary school in the south of Styria, Austria, and planning to integrate more English in the teaching. Mrs. Kodet , one of our 8 primary school teachers, is planning to teach some subjects (physical education, music, arts and crafts,...) mainly in English and to take part in projects with schools from different countries. Our school is very open to new learning methods and would appreciate getting new input and ideas from other countries, especially when they concern English language training. Mrs. Kodet would like to attend a 2 week teacher training course in Malta, St. Julians at ETI teacher training centre. Sending Mrs. Kodet to Malta would be a benefit for our school as she could support us with new input she would get from her experience in Malta as the course is really specified on primary school methodology including English. Very interesting would also be the exchange of different countries, as there will be many primary school teachers from different countries taking part. This is also a chance for further work or exchange with different other schools and how they deal with including English in a natural and multisensory and of course playful way in their primary school teaching in a good and sensitive way (as in the first 2 years in Primary school English should be thaught in an integrative way). As a participant of the ETI teacher training course in Malta Mrs. Kodets competences would be developed and allow her to gain more self esteem in applying and using English in class, new teaching methods and the use of online tools. The aim of the course is for teachers to experiance a range of interesting activities linking methodology and learning theories to primary classroom today. As the sessions will be practical and will include a focus on using technology and mult- media, this will help Mrs. Kodet to reflect on her approach to teaching today`s students (and of course she will give her informations also to the other staff of our school). The course will be taught interactively, with input, workshops and group work. Participants are expected to take an active role in all sessions, maximising their use of English, and experiencing for themselves the activities conered in the sessions. Teachers will be introduced, during the course, to various web- based sites which they could use after the course. During the course, teachers will be asked to reflect upon the course and come up with a personal development action plan, and select activities which they would like to try out in their own classes. They will be asked to join a dedicated web group site, to exchange ideas and comment on their Plan and its implementation. The site will allow networking and contact with the trainers and fellow colleagues, and with participants from other courses. In addition, participants will be given a post- course 3 month subscription to a e- lerning online site to further develop their language knowledge and skills. The course is eligible for funding as part of the Comenius EU Life Long learning Programme and Erasmus+ Programme! We hope that Mrs. Kodet will get a grant for the erasmus+staff mobility programme as we see it as a chance for our primary school!
