In response to the business requirement of a major IT company that needed to support the integration of employees who were non-native speakers of English, GEMS NI developed an innovative “Talk IT” programme that addressed the business English language skills of workers in a large insurance company that have a large IT department to improve their competence in oral and written communication.Talk IT is directly aligned to the development of vocational skills required for the labour market and specifically targets the needs of employees in the IT sector to develop their skills to communicate in English language with customers and colleagues and also in respect of IT software/ hardware development activities were the language used is English.GEMS NI have also delivered, and continue to do so, the TALK-IT programme in other business sectors that include Call Centre, Insurance Council Cleansing department. The flexibility of the programme was an additional asset to the partners in identifying and engaging with a range of employers. Talk IT was implemented by a consortium that brought together partners with the required skills, knowledge, expertise and commitment to ensure the projects success. In addition the partners have language guidance, vocational education and training, information communication technology, human resources and business improvement specialisms that ensured that the project can achieve the optimum results.The tangible outcomes are an English language programme for employees in European countries who are non-native speakers of English to:Enhance their ability to communicate effectivelyImprove their workplace learning and the performance andImprove the competitiveness of the employer organisation.The impact of Talk IT was an innovative programme which can be used generically in vocational education and training settings with IT students/trainees as part of their learning curriculum and in a work-based learning context tailored to the specific needs of an IT sector employer. Talk IT will also contribute to the competitiveness of businesses both in the European context and globally and will also support the mobility of employees throughout Europe.
