Tablet tutuksi ja aktiiviseksi osaksi opetusta
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our school, Oulunkylän Yhteiskoulu (Oulunkylä Secondary School), is a school consisting of about 900 students. We function as a lower secondary school (grades 7-9, ages 12-16) and a high-ranking upper secondary school (ages 16-19). We have about 60 full-time teachers. Our comprehensive school students (lower secondary school) have a chance to specialize in music, physical education and natural sciences+mathematics. Key elements in our education are technology, ecology and active citizenship. We want our students to see themselves as part of a community. While cherishing our traditions, we also orient ourselves towards the future. Information technology and media are already a significant part of young people's lives, and an ever-increasing part of everyday schoollife and working life. Our project is about bringing the working methods of the school closer to students' everyday lives. Our school wants to be a part of our all the more digitalizing world, so we have already provided all of our teaching staff with own tablets. Presently our teachers have a reasonable concept of the basic use of the tablet, but further support is needed in making the tablet a true teaching method. The teachers selected for this training are a good representation of different subjects. Our aim is that each teacher who participates in the training will then function as practise-based tablet educators for all the other teachers of our school, in workshops etc. They will also take the lead in developing our school's tablet teaching methods in their own subject. The selected teachers all have tablet skills, and they are motivated to learn more and to refresh their own teaching methods. We believe that the training of these selected teachers will enforce the tablet skills of our whole teaching staff, which in its turn is essential in guiding the students into systematic use of tablets in the classroom. Further educating sufficiently many teachers in the use of tablets in teaching will guarantee that the whole teaching staff of our large school will be up-to-date in their skills, and that enough skilled collegial support will be available to them. Our school is always seeking to be up-to-date, and wishes to be at the forefront of applying the latest teaching methods and technology. We believe that the use of tablet technology in teaching will improve the motivation of students from all possible levels and skills, develop their media-critical thinking, and provide them with added capability to adjust themselves into further studies and working life, where they will be functioning as future citizens with good technology skills.
