Sustainable tourism development among the Oxbows of the Tisza River (SUTODEVAMOXTI)
Start date: Aug 31, 2010, End date: Aug 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Oxbows along Szeged, Röszke, Martonos and Kanjiza are considered to be the biggest ones between the 150 most important oxbows of the Tisza River. however these significant natural assets may disappear. The oxbows are under rehabilitation, thanks to previous project. In current project the aim is to define suitable tourism functions for the oxbows. Activities: 1. feasibility study for the rehabilitation of oxbows, 2. roundtable-negotiations in both countries, with inhabitants, entrepreneurs and civil organizations. 3. tourism and economic development feasibility study. Tourism sectors which may be launched in the rehabilitated oxbows without endangering their subsistence, would be defined in this study. 4. Database-capacity map as a part of the project, which would contain the natural, architectural, folk art, and the already existing tourism capacities as well. 5. Webpage 6. Conference on the achievements to introduce the finished capacity-map. Achievements: In the development plans of both Röszke and Kanjiža the development of aquatic tourism is emphasised. At the moment the oxbow serves the needs of inland water and rainwater collection; it is used for the purpose of fishing. Furthermore, it provides water for irrigation of croplands. The present condition of the oxbow is disastrous; it is often referred to as black water nowadays. Owing to the gradual shrinking of aquatic habitats and destructive human intervention a considerable part of natural heritage may disappear. One of the most important aims of the project – besides the preparation of strategic studies – is to raise the awareness of the importance of environmental protection and to promote partnership. Although the overall rehabilitation of the oxbow is not possible within the framework of the present project, – on the basis of the documentation, which has been prepared as a result of the project entitled Raising Environmental Potential along the Oxbows of River Tisza – it is our most important task and aim to prepare a study which results in the development of tourism in the area.Within the framework of the project – beyond the preparation of a feasibility study – an important role is given to communication. Non-governmental organisations, anglers, entrepreneurs appear as target groups, but indirectly all inhabitants may enjoy the benefits of the implementation of the project in the future. We expect non-governmental organisations to co-operate, since they are the best means of mediation of the results of the project to the inhabitants. The preparation of the study means only the first step of co-operation between the two settlements in the field of tourism. The border between Hungary and Serbia lies at the middle of the oxbow, which means that the common strategy in this area determines the dialogue between the two countries on the long term.
