This project aims to support the implementation of CLIL in Cyprus Primary Education. CLIL has numerous benefits for language learning and education in general and it is an approach strongly supported by the European Commission. The Department of Primary Education has made significant developments in promoting CLIL and aims to expand the approach to more schools. There is, therefore, a need for developing local capacity in the area of CLIL and this is what the project aims to do by achieving the following objectives:a) to train CLIL teachers who can act as a core group in different subject areas (e.g. P.E, Science, etc.) and in different districts (e.g. Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, Nicosia)b) to develop the CLIL capacity of the consortium members enabling the participating schools to act as core CLIL schools b) to train experienced CLIL teachers or subject advisors to become trainers or mentors and developers of CLIL educational materialsc) to train school inspectors and subject advisors so that they can support the implementation of CLIL in the schools they work withd) to identify good practice in CLIL Centres in other countries so as to establish an effective CLIL Centre in Cypruse) to create networks with other CLIL Centres, school,s teachers and CLIL specialists for further collaborationThe project is a consortium led by the Department of Primary Education with members including 6 primary schools from the Larnaca, Nicosia, Paphos and Limassol districts and the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute. The expertise brought together in this consortium includes novice and experienced CLIL teachers, school subject advisors and curriculum developers and Primary Education Inspectors of various school subjects and of general education. The project will mainly achieve its objectives through training offered to each of the participating members according to their specific needs. Training activities will include structured training courses for development of CLIL competences, structured training courses for development of CLIL materials writing competences and other training activities such as customised training prepared especially for the needs of Dpt of Education inspectors by CLIL Centres in other countries. Such training will include school visits, discussions with teachers, headteachers,, CLIL experts and CLIL Centre officials. The results are expected to be long lasting and trigger significant changes in Cyprus Primary Education. By developing the local capacity in the area of CLIL, the consortium aims to lay down strong foundations for the expansion of CLIL implementation in Cyprus Primary Education. This will be a significant step in the modernisation and internationalisation of Cyprus Primary Education.
