To answer the needs of the strategy of sustainable development, the industrialists of the Atlantic Area seek, now more than ever, procedures and products offering solid environmental advantages. The SUPERMAT project offers them a new prospect for development, founded on the technology of supercritical fluids. This method, consisting of bringing fluids to precise conditions of temperature and pressure, thus giving them properties which are in between those of a gas and a liquid, makes it possible to use new production procedures – and therefore to create new products – which are innovative and which respect the environment. The SUPERMAT project contributes to strengthening the performance and the competitiveness of the Atlantic Area in a sector of technological innovation which is still dominated by the United States and Japan. Achievements: A database presenting the skills in the partners in the SUPERMAT network has been put online (http://univ-pau.fr/supermat) and includes, for each partner, a page showing the research subjects developed, their skills, their contact details and a link to their website. This database has shown the current fields of application of supercritical materials (especially agribusiness) and the possible fields of application (for example industrial solvents). Four major skills common to the partners in the SUPERMAT network have been identified: extraction by supercritical fluids, treatment of effluents by hydrothermal oxidation, synthesis and formation of powders, formation of materials. 35 pages presenting the pilot tools have been drawn up and constitute the technology available in the SUPERMAT network. They are available on the project website, http://univ-pau.fr/supermat and show the pilot means provided to SMEs in the Atlantic Area to carry out technology transfer operations. 3 training seminars have raised awareness in the industrial fabric of the potentialities of the technologies implementing supercritical fluids and have enabled professionals in the sectors concerned to acquire or perfect their knowledge of these technologies. These events also enabled us to group the scientific skills in the SUPERMAT network in the domains concerned and thus to propose a full and multiple offer to stakeholders in industry. Tours of the premises of the sites concerned have shown companies part of the networks technological and scientific potential for research and transfer. 16 personal exchanges have taken place during the three years of the SUPERMAT project. Among these were 9 thesis students and 3 young researchers; these exchanges have facilitated the mobility of researchers and scientists within the Atlantic Area, initiated collaborations between partners in the network, have enabled visiting staff to train in the use of various pressure instruments, in some cases with a view to future investments forecast in their original organisation, and for most, have enabled the travelling partners to gain access to equipment and skills which are not available on their own site, which has led to a faster development of research topics than would have been the case if the partners had not had access to these means; most of the people on these exchange visits were thesis students who will thus have learnt during their education to develop a working method based on trans-national cooperation, A common identity has been set up, used for all the actions carried out in the SUPERMAT network, and those alone, in order to guarantee the relevance of the actions to the strategy. This common identity gives the network international renown and is also, internally, a powerful factor in grouping and developing a "network culture". A wide dissemination of the skills and knowledge acquired has been provided by the website, papers in technical journals, popular press articles, scientific papers, etc. A leaflet presenting the technology available in the network has been published and widely disseminated during conferences, seminars, exhibitions and also through innovation networks. The 3 seminars organised have enabled us to present the activities of the network to the public and to ensure dissemination at European, national, regional and local level.
