SU-Abroad: Teachers on the road
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Campus Sint-Ursula consists of three schools (SUM-SUL-SUI) and is located at Kanunnik Davidlaan 15 in the centre of Lier. Lier is a city in the province of Antwerp with about 34,000 inhabitants. Sint-Ursula-middenschool (SUM) takes care of the students of the first grade (year 1 and 2). After these first two years of secondary school, students can choose for Sint-Ursula-lyceum (SUL) for a general secondary education in the second and third grade, or they can choose for Sint-Ursula-instituut (SUI), a trade and fashion school that offers technical and vocational study areas. Our campus has 1,235 students (230 of them are students with special needs) and 168 teachers. We are widely known as a warm-hearted school that feels very strongly about care in general. (website: http://www.campussintursula.be)Goal of the project:Just like any other school we strive to offer highly qualitative education. The previous school year we’ve set a number of priorities with our campus. Internationalisation, care for learning and living and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are put first on the priority list. On top of that we were looking for a solution on how to deal with boredom at school in our technical and vocational study areas. To deal with these issues, we found inspiration in the offer of the Eeckhoutcentre, a partner we’ve worked with in the past. They deliver strong content-based and organisational work.As a school we have to adjust and improve constantly and we’re convinced that cooperative learning is the base of pedagogical and didactical changes. By networking with all sorts of European teachers, by exchanging experiences and by taking classes together, we make sure that our team improves its skills and qualities on a permanent basis.Participants, different courses and motivation to participateIn this file we submit an application for 12 teachers. We are determined to provide them with the necessary knowhow in three areas.4 teachers are eager to acquire experience and expertise in the STEM-process. STEM is a new course in our school. The STE(A)M course of the Eeckhoutcentre promises to perfect the pedagogical and didactical skills of the teachers in this matter. The four participating teachers have been forming the STEM course in the first year since September. As the second year starts in September, they are now looking for new insights into the pedagogical and didactical approach and they would like to share projects, practical examples and lesson plans in an international setting. Within our school we see a significant growth in diversity. The M-decreet was introduced and our Campus started up an OKAN-class. Our school culture is changing quickly, the teachers have to run along, care has to be broadened and deepened. With the course on ‘Diversity’, we would like to get more insight in the different aspects of diversity in the educational system. We would like to exchange experiences with our international colleagues, who might be in a next level in the process, to analyse and possibly improve the approach at school. Thirdly, we would like to deal with the problem of boredom at school and the increased risk of dropping out without a degree, by renewing our teaching methods. Our campus has a large technical and vocational branch. It is often difficult to get these students motivated again. The course ‘Non-formal learning’, organised by the Eeckhoutcentre, deals with methods that can help and improve the motivation and learning attitude of these students. Results and impact of the projectIn a short period of time, teachers gain experience and knowhow that can’t be formed by staying put. By exchanging experiences with other EU-participants they will be able to expand their views on education. We expect that the participants will help to design our European Development Plan and implement their acquired knowledge and competences in workgroups and departments, in projects and so on in order to lift our school system to another level. We hope to welcome them carrying refreshing ideas, new methods and techniques that can be implemented and we hope that they can ‘infect’ both teachers and students to try out this international experience for themselves. The school will use all these practices to come up with a policy about non-formal learning, STEM, diversity and to become a leading example of a school of the future in Lier.
