Study visit of active democratic participation for young people

Background: The YMCA and YWCA in Denmark wants to develop new partnerships in Palestine and other European countries to strengthen the opportunities of young people's democratic participation and active citizenship. We find that the conflict in Palestine addresses mayor topics such as democracy, justice and human rights with relevance for young people of today to relate to, since the Israeli-Palestinan conflict also has is presence in Denmark and other European countries. Many Danish young people will at some time meet young people from Palestine on their way through life and the education system, and in this perspective we believe that the acquired experiences will be an advantage for them as persons, the educational system and later on in the labour market. The themes of the conflict in Palestine will open up for reflection on values, both personal and European. Activity: A study visit for a group of 4 junior youth workers and 2 accompanying persons The study trip consists of visits to other youth organizations and participation in a conference with thematical relevance for the study visit. Objectives: - To gain awareness of and knowledge about the actual situation, conflict and background in Palestine - To share and discuss with young Palestinians and Europeans and develop on future partnerships - To raise intercultural skills, language skills, skills of initiative and communication for the participating young people and thereby prepare them for education and labour market - To give experiences to young people about their opportunities to make a difference by taking active part in civil society and show them possible ways of doing this. Thereby training their skills of democratic participation and being an active, well-informed citizen. - That the involved organizations will learn from the new partnerships in new methods and practices, for example in the recognition and validation of informal skills gained through international activities. Methodology: The method will be participatory both in preparing the Danish participants and in their contribution to and influence on future partnerships. Expected results and impacts: - New partnerships will develop focusing on youth, democratic training and civil society participation - Improvement of the participants' intercultural skills, language skills, their understanding of the value of democratic particpation, and their ability to take initiative as well as their communication skills. - Improved processes in the involved organizations for recognition and validation of competences gained through the international activities by using the Youth Pass. - That the intercultural experiences will spread both into the participating organization and into broader civil society, in Denmark as well as partner countries through the participants. Potential long term benefits: Individual level: For the individual participants involved the benefits will be improvements of skills documenting in the Youth pass which will allow them for better opportunities in education and labour market Organizational level: Higher capacity to lead international partnerships and offer more activities for youth mobility. Qualification of the organizational opportunities to help young people towards education and jobs. National and European level: Benefits in education system and labour market of persons with a high cultural awareness, intercultural skills and the experienced value of active democratic participation.
