Strengthening the Role of EU Law in American Legal Academia
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

I plan to teach EU Law both at graduate level (to law school students in regular courses) and at undergraduate level (to students in the College of Arts and Sciences majoring or minoring in European Union Studies, either by cross-registration in the law school or by means of self-contained pedagogical units in other courses). I also plan to revise and expand my course in International Trade Regulation to sharpen the focus on the EU’s perspective on trade and to monitor closely the developments of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership. The TTIP will be also the subject of lectures that I will deliver to students in our master’s programs (LL.M. in American Law and Executive LL.M.) I will also teach a unit on Human Rights in the EU in the context of the International Human Rights Seminar offered regularly at BU Law. Over the years, I have frequently guest-lectured on EU-law subjects in courses taught by other colleagues (e.g. in a course on Legal Globalization at Harvard Law School). Given the enthusiasm for such modules and a pattern of regular invitations to guest-lecture, I plan to develop and permanently establish a range of 2 or 3-hour pedagogical units to be hosted by colleagues whose subjects have limited exposure to, but are increasingly affected by, European Law.I plan to increase the frequency of academic events organized by the European Law Section of the American Association of Law Schools (AALS), which I currently chair, and to boost the relevance of EU legal scholarship in the activities of the Center for the Study of Europe at Boston University. I plan to focus my research on the relation between internal and external trade policies of the European Union and to host a conference concerning my book project. This project concerns the distributive impact of external and internal trade policies of the European Union. An outline of this project can be found in my paper, Trade and History (with G. Geneve), BU J Int'l L (2015).
