Strengthening security and facilitating cross-border cohesion through improvement of entry/exit infrastructure at Lithuanian-Belarusian border crossing points (LT-BY entry/exit improvement)
Start date: Dec 31, 2011, End date: Jun 29, 2013 PROJECT  FINISHED

After introduction of local border traffic between LT and BY the level of illegal immigration may increase. Most of illegal immigration takes place by forgered or counterfeit travel documents and overstay. LT and BY border crossing points lack relevant equipment to check the authenticity of electronically stored information, limitations of duration of stay and number of entries. On the one hand, the border traffic rules should be efficient and transparent, on the other hand, they must ensure security. The project aims at strengthening security in the border-control points on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border through improvement of the relevant facility which will meet EU border management standards for a more effective and reliable check and identification of travellers. Expected Results: A higher level of security at land border crossing points will be ensured by installation of new equipment and software for checking the authenticity of electronic travel documents and verification/identification of the travellers using biometrics. The development of the entry/exit information system will enable to record the entry/exit information and alert violations. Lithuanian and Belarusian border services will conduct researches of the security situation, elaborate a feasibility study and a strategy paper to prepare conditions for streamlining their joint efforts.
