Stats on Life
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project "Stats on Life" (SOL) promotes innovative practices and learning methods (Learning by Researching, Collaborative Learning, Content and Language Integrated Learning) through collecting and analyzing data on various aspects of life in three European countries ie Finland, the Czech Republic and Spain. The idea is to enhance basic skills in mathematics , science and foreign languages (statistics, multiliteracy) and to promote the use of modern ICT at school. In the project "Stats on Life" -Pupils study their everyday life and environment producing statistical information, -Pupils share and publish information and results in English (and other foreign languages) on matters that they themselves find interesting, using various tools offered by modern technology, -Pupils study, compare and present information and results gathered from different countries and learn about other cultures (European dimension). All this will develop pupils' key competences (incl. mathematics and literacy). As to the partners of our project, Finland (Kannelmäki Comprehensive, Helsinki) represents northern Europe, the Czech Republic (Gymnázium Jeseník, Jeseník) represents middle-east Europe and Spain (IES La Albuera, Segovia) represents southern Europe. These countries promise great differences in lifestyle, culture and traditions, in educational systems as well as in family life and core values, giving plenty of material for our pupils to research and work on. The approximate age of the participating pupils has been decided to be from 11 to 16. At the end of the project we will have a considerable amount of statistical data, graphs and other material, which allows comparisons between participating countries and cultures and facilitates the dissemination of the project results. The results of the research projects (statistics and comparisons presented in various ways) as well as the material produced to gather information and produce statistics (questionnaires, quizzes, interviews etc.) will be put together in an e-Book, published on the net, so that everyone can consult it and use our material. Our project will encourage both pupils and teachers to cooperate in interdisciplinary projects. This will lead to enhanced basic and transversal skills and to a new, more collaborative working and learning culture in the participating schools. Phenomenon based learning will increase cooperation and the number of cross curricular projects in each school, paving the way towards a more participatory approach to learning and teaching, encouraging pupils to life long learning and giving teachers the chance to exchange good practices and develop their methods. What is most important, learning by researching and phenomenon based learning as methods, accompanied by new technology, can still be actively used also after the two-year-long project period in all the participating schools. In Helsinki, the new Finnish curriculum 2016 engages every teacher in this kind of approach, so this is not only an option but an obligation for some of us. We believe that our project inspires enthusiasm and confidence in each participant school and might serve as an example for other schools as well. With this project we want to answer the need to enhance not only the basic skills but the 21st century skills in general in every European country.
