Course Summary In 2011 a trainee has started to invastigate the possibilities of starting English classes for the joungest pupiils. She informed the team. Two year later a group of 3 teachers, 2 trainees and a teacher from the education school Marnix Acadamy started to make a plan for the future. They choose a new method and the way to start English. In 2014 the whole team was involved in following the course: Engels leren is Engels doen' by Klaas Hoorn (Marnix Acadamy). The next step is the course: Methodology and Language for Primary Teachers'in Canterbury: The course is for teachers of Young Learners who need to improve their ability and confidence in their use of English and develop their teaching skills for Young Learners. The participants will be 4 teachers working in group 3, 2 in group 5, 1 in group 8, the coordinator and the director. Alle have little experience in teaching English. Speaking English is on secondary school level. This course is practical. By ‘doing’ activities designed for the Primary classroom, you will experience the methodology from the Young Learner’s perspective. The course is both a language improvement and a methodology course. Programme of the training activities • Teaching the 4 skills (listening/reading/writing/speaking) • Creative activities for Young Learners • Classroom management skills • Chants, rhymes and songs + storytelling, drama and music • Using communicative learning activities in Primary teaching contexts • Pronunciation work (through children’s songs and rhymes) • Work on grammar and vocabulary • Language for the classroom • Building confidence in teaching in and through English - particularly through drama activities Description of training content: Preparation Each applicant to send in action plan 4 weeks before the course outlining hopes and objectives for achievement as a result of attending this course. Objectives The course aims to provide the participants with state of the art theories and practice in teaching Young Learners. In addition, the strong language element embedded will result in the participants’ development of their language skills. Expected results As a result of attending this course, the participants will be more knowledgeable, confident teachers of YL as well as more fluent user of English. The coordinator will be responsible for booking the trip, evaluating the course, monitoring the way the teacher will use their skills. Take care of sharing information with the colleagues who do not follow the course.
