START POINT, the exhibition of the best graduate works of European fine art academies
Start date: May 1, 2012,

START POINT is a show of the best graduate fine art works (mostly thesis works) completed at selected art academies. It consists of the main and two selective exhibitions, a publication and a web site. The second part of the project is the residencies for the awarded artists who present the results of the residency at an exhibition. The project has been presented annually since 2003. The first years it was only focused on four Czech art schools, but by 2011, 35 schools from 18 European countries took part. In 2010, the project was taken over by the Foundation Arbor vitae which has brought new directions including the planned transfer to the prestigious Centre of Contemporary Art DOX in Prague in 2011 and the planned expansion which would cover all the important schools in Europe. The project is based on a simple principle. At each school, a jury composed of two representatives of the expert team and of one of the school chooses the best work. The expert team will then create the large jury which will choose the prize winners at the main exhibition (5 to 7 individuals). The awarded works will be shown in two exhibitions THE BEST OF START POINT (Bratislava, Bremen). The award is a month-long residency in the following year and the results of the residency is an exhibition STARTED in the GAVU Cheb. The recipient of the main prize has the opportunity to have a catalogue published. The project has several goals: to help the young artists in the difficult period when they finish school; to contrast the best works from European schools in the form of an exhibition; and finally to allow permanent contacts to form between curators and artists. The he main goal of the support from this program is to start expanding the project and through its transfer to a more prestigious space to attract the attention of the media and potential sponsors. This would help ensure the further existence of the project in the future. We are applying for the years 2012 and 2013.
