With the project Professional development for enhancing students’ active learning , Sund upper secondary school wants to enhance the staffs' professional development in order to enhance their competence to implement the new pedagogy in the new school curriculum about increasing students‘ active learning and enhancing their responsibility for their learning and stress the staffs‘ professional development in general in the fields of action research, teaching of History, Danish, Mathematics, Natural sciences and Arts. The objective is to facilitate the school to reach its aim of progressive schooling and learning that will make students more able to participate in a modern and an international environment and become lifelong learners and that will decrease the students’ dropout rate. It is also the aim to enhance the staffs´ professional development to make them more able to actively participate in the transformation process of implementing a new school curriculum and the new periodic system with assignment based learning in the foreground with emphasis on enhancing students as resilient, reflective, resourceful and creative learners. It is also the aim to make it easier for the staff to utilize the new classrooms for natural sciences, arts and multimedia in the new building extension of the school that was opened in January 2016. Two teachers in Danish will attend a special course on implementing the new curriculum in Danish in June in Denmark. Four staff members will attend a workshop on Building Learning Power in October in England and will also participate in a school visit to a school that has implemented BLP. The focus on working methods in the classroom and enhance the students as learners is in great consonance with our emphasis in our new pedagogy on active student learning and it appeals to teachers across the curriculum. One teacher in Mathematics will be job shadowing for one week in a school in London in England that has successfully implemented the ideology of Building Learning Power. Four representatives from the action research group of the school will participate in an international conference of CARN in November 2016 in Lincoln in England. There two of them will introduce the work of the action research group and the cooperation with an outside consultant at the University of Iceland. They will also, learn about various international projects about teaching and learning and increase their competence of the research method of action research. Two history teachers intend to participate in the annual conference of Euroclio, the European Association of History Educators in March 2017 in San Sebastian in Spain. Teachers from all over Europe will introduce their work, new methods in teaching and new teaching materials. It is very important for teachers to have an opportunity to learn about international trends in their professional field and make connections with European history teachers. Two teachers and one school-leader will attend the BETT conference in London in January 2017. They will learn about new methods and technology that will enhance their competence to introduce new technology in the new classrooms for Natural sciences and Arts in the new building extension of the school. All of the participants in the project, Professional development for enhancing students’ active learning will increase their competence in their professional field, increase their open mindedness, increase their language skills and create international connections with possibilities of further cooperation. The project provides new opportunities for professional development and enhances job satisfaction. The participants will introduce the results and their experience of the training courses to all staff members of the school and through that the project will produce a more competent staff to participate in the changing process within the school and enhance professional practice that again will lead to more competence and better achievement of the students.
