Stärkung der interkulturellen Handlungsfähigkeit der Lernenden durch modernen Fremdsprachenunterricht und Anwendung der Sprache im Sachfachunterricht
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project was developed on the basis from experience gained during the implementation of European projects in recent years, but also while involving specialist texts in foreign languages and other sources in the teaching of subjects . The results showed that the students are not yet able to achieve the desired level; i.e. to communicate with others about issues in different subjects in a foreign language or to understand any foreign language text in written or spoken form. The primary objective is to improve the quality of foreign language teaching. A stronger motivation for the students for learning languages is essential. This can be achieved through true-to-life orientated, modern language teaching and bilingual subject teaching. As a result, the students will show a significant improvement in their performance and a better command in the flexible use of a foreign language. During the first stage, four teachers should acquire the requisite skills by attending appropriate courses in English. Two of the teachers, who are trained language teachers, are supposed to deal first of all with methodology of foreign language teaching which includes the appropriate usage of the digital media and information and communication technology. This should result in a lively, motivating language teaching which meets the interests of the students. Furthermore, two teachers of mathematics/physics/computer science are supposed to acquire basic knowledge about a methodologically skilful teaching in a foreign language and in particular the appropriate usage of foreign specialist texts in their subjects. Additionally, all participants should use their stay and course to network to teachers from other European states, to exchange experience and to develop ideas for possible e- Twinning projects. After completing the courses, the teachers are supposed to plan appropriate learning units for implementation and testing in educational use. A closer co-operation amongst these teachers and their mutual support is being considered. By sharing their experiences with the group of teachers, we hope to multiplier effects. A continuation of the project is planned for the years to come; not only through in- school training, but also in the participation of other teachers at similar courses in other European countries. In the long term, we expect that the students will understand that learning a foreign language is always more than an end in itself , but will recognize its necessity and will experience its benefits immediately. The reduction of language barriers should increasingly enable European projects at an advanced level. In addition, we hope that many the teachers perceive the teaching of foreign languages, not only as a task of language teachers, but also recognize opportunities to apply and use foreign language skills in other subjects.
