Sport can be inclusive tool for refugees
Start date: Jan 1, 2016, End date: Dec 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project ‘Sport can be inclusive tool for refugees’ is a project that is trying to change certain trends in our society, especially in the field of education. With sport and other activities we wish to have impact on younger generation that is often influenced by a different cultural background, poor family relations, social status, have special needs or deal with other differences in society. We wish to bring these individuals together and through active free time activities show them some new guidelines they might find interesting. The refugee wave of migration that recently came to Europe made many people scared and uncertain, people are concerned with a question about their adaptation to the new environment. Refugees are individuals that went though many emotional crisis in their life, they are mentally exhausted and frightened. With this project we want to offer them an opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. Inclusion though sport activities is one of the most spontaneous manners, it is strengthening ties on a nonverbal level at which refugees are often stigmatized and marginalized from society. Friendship, trust and happiness are spontaneous emotions that rise up during practicing sport. At the same time they learn fair play and they start to respect diversity, discipline and organization. These are the values that we want to achieve with the young population in this project. Finnish organization Icehearts has a 20 years long tradition of successful operation in the field of sports inclusion. Their performance results are inspiring, as they work with many immigrants that are successfully included in many sport activities though which they are learning about specific cultural values that are often different from their own cultural background, but are important in the society they live in. Using these methods they are stabilizing the society and in a broader sense prevent violence, use of drugs and alcohol, etc. Our desired result is a successful implementation of a project similar to our partner’s. Our long term goal is clear for the past few years – despite the fact that the situation of young people with less opportunities is improving, we are still facing many situations when they are not equally involved in social interactions. Many individuals stay excluded not by their own fault but due to broken family relationships, particular needs, possible addictions (drugs, alcohol, etc.) and other reasons that are not a consequence of their own actions, but present the environment they were born in. We strive to optimize the inclusion of those young people in society by using inclusive methods such as sport activities and other.
