Specialist English as a Foreign Language for European Public Health

The main goal of the project is to develop a specialist English course for European public health specialists. The project will build upon information gathered in a previously fundedLeonardo da Vinci project, which identified desirable competencies for public health employees, with the specific aim of directly engaging with selected public health institutions in the development of the English language courses. Project partners will initially assess the English language needs of public health institutions and professionals, for which a tool will be developed to gauge the extent of, formally and informally acquired, English language skills. The results of this exercise will inform the development and content of teaching content and teaching methods. Course content will be delivered in the form of 'teaching segments' and will employ a variety of teaching tools such as case studies and problem solving exercises. Educational materials and teaching guidelines will be available in a variety of mediums, to include a printed handbook, a support manual, a dictionary containing the most important vocabulary in the field of health care (in different combinations of the partner languages), a series of audio/video cassettes, CD-Rom or DVD and web-based material including an online version of the printed dictionary. The developed language course will further contain a number of assessment tests in the form of self-assessment and teacher-based assessment. The English language course will be piloted with public health employees and students in the partner countries with findings influencing final course development. Stakeholders in public health will play a key part in the dissemination of the project's results. English language teachers and organisations will also be targeted for dissemination, which will make use of project publications, seminars and a dedicated project website.
