Specialised Training Courses for Persons Involved in Decommissioning of Nuclear Installations

The project sets out to design, develop and pilot vocational training for nuclear power plant personnel to prepare them for the task of decommissioning plants. In particular, the project addresses the acute need to train nuclear power plant personnel in central and eastern European countries to be able to decommission both outdated and research reactors. To this end, project partners representing central and eastern European will benefit from expertise offered by European bodies and from specialist organisations active in this field. The project partnership will establish four working groups, responsible for needs analysis, curriculum development, the production of training materials and evaluation & dissemination. New training courses will be developed in response to an identified skills gap for staff working in the decommissioning of reactors. In addition to developing materials for existing personnel, courses will also be developed for university students studying degrees relevant to the nuclear industry and who are likely to be employed in this sector. Course material will be delivered as internet-based tutorials, on CD-Rom and as a printed handbook and will be piloted with employees who are likely to be involved in decommissioning. Trainers will be trained to deliver courses. By the end of the project the partnership will have produced a report for dissemination on the analysis, design and implementation of the training activities. The report will be available via the internet and in printed form and will target all relevant European bodies. Project partners will regularly update each other on the current status of their decommissioning process and its evaluation will be assisted by international nuclear bodies.
