Solidarität überwindet Grenzen
Start date: Jun 16, 2014, End date: Feb 10, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Youth without Borders (JoG), in cooperation with Welcome to Europe (w2eu), plans to organise an encounter called "Solidarity crossing borders" between youth groups , in August 2014. JoG is a nationwide youth initiative in Germany of young refugees who campaign against racism, deportation and for a right to stay and the empowerment of young refugees. w2eu is a transnational network with reach into many European countries. The info-van of w2eu tours through Greece to make available information for, and about refugees. w2eu also supports local groups and initiatives in their work with, for and of refugees. 20 participants from Germany and 20 from Greece will take part in our project. The project is to take place on Lesvos/Greece and should last for 10 days. This is a place that is known to many of the active youths due to their own history of flight. For them this is the first point of entry into Europe. For others this place symbolises their first point of entry. This is a place where they, as refugees, experienced solidarity from the inhabitants of the island. This island is very close to Turkey and this is why many refugees arrive there. The political situation in Greece is very difficult for refugees. There they experience placement in closed camps and a life without rights. It does not matter if they arrive as a family, as unaccompanied minors or single grown-ups. There are no helpdesks and the people have to manage on their own. w2eu and active local volunteers try to support these people, but the resources are very limited. Both of the partner organisations in our project engage with similar issues, such as flight, migration, forms of solidarity, public work, on-site support and participation of disadvantaged youths. We have, of course, different experiences and structures. We want to bring together our experiences and structures in this project to build a functional and sustainable structure on-site. Flight and migration are European issues and this is why the networking of youths who are active in this field is very important to us. This networking should take place through a collective process in order to make visible the deplorable situation. The youths will multiply awareness and will work during the project but also afterwards to sensitise the public to these issues. This will be done through informal channels, such as friends, colleagues at work, fellow pupils and so on, but also through organised workshops, publications, and in public conversations in schools and elsewhere. In order to make this youth movement publicly visible on Lesvos, we want to collectively organise a drop-in point, at first for a limited period. For the conceptualisation of this there will be workshops that will, at some point, be opened up also to people who are actively involved on Lesvos. The emphasis of this youth movement is self-organisation, alongside of the information made available. To that end workshops concerning legal but also psychological questions (about dealing with trauma) will be organised. This is because active youths in Greece often encounter newly-arrived and often traumatised youths. The youths from Germany are to be introduced by the Greek youths to the local organisations, and the collaboration with these, e.g. PIKPA. One of the main issues is the close collaboration with local organisations, especially the exchange with PIKPA. In order to offer, besides these very difficult aspects, also a place for intercultural exchange there will be an open music workshop. This will function as an informal space for different forms of exchange.
