Sólheimar
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Nov 1, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aim of the project is to give young people in Europe the opportunity to take part in the community of Sólheimar. Sólheimar is a non-profit, self-owned organisation that service forty three persons with special needs. There over 100 residents in Sólheimar, who are very diverse, including disabled people, long-time unemployed people, prisoners and long-term patients. They range widely in age and some have been here most of their lives. Each person is unique in their capabilities, their development and their potential. It is important to focus on the possibilities of people, not their limitations. Another important pillar in the ideology of the Sólheimar community is enriching social involvement. All social activities are open to all residents. The volunteer has a choice of seven projects with the residents of the community: 1) Sesseljuhús ? Centre for Sustainable Development and Education. 2) Ölur Forestry ? the only organic forestry in Iceland. 3) Organic Horticulture in the greenhouse Sunna. 4) Organic food production and Bakery where bread, 5) Art gallery /grocery store 6) Art workshops where the volunteer will assist in weaving, textiles, painting, ceramics, organic soap-making, candle-making or woodworking 7) Outdoor work, maintenance and carpentry. This will give the volunteer the opportunity to learn to learn and learn something new, to communicate with others, using photo or video cameras, learn to handle the computer, for example how to send e-mails, how to make a poster, or how to work with new programs. Learn how to take part in social activities and respect other people and also to learn about new culture and share their own culture in Sólheimar and neighbouring community?s.
