Social Work Virtual Campus

Europe has the ambition to develop into a competitive knowledge based society and economy of which social cohesiveness is a dominant feature. Social cohesion, though, is not self evident. Social exclusion and ethnocentrism are challenges the EU has to deal with in realizing its ambition. These challenges in their international context are affecting the social work profession and as a result education preparing future social workers needs to change. Until recently this education was not engaged in developing a truly internationally oriented curriculum. The Social Work Virtual Campus (SW-VirCamp) project is addressing these needs by developing an international specialization social work in an international Virtual Campus setting. The international specialization will deal with the aforementioned challenges and by doing so better prepare future social workers for their job. The virtual campus will provide opportunities to social work students and staff to work and cooperate internationally, while physical student mobility also has proven to be problematic. The main planned output/results are:1. an international specialization social work, including the development and testing of a course on community work/community development (15 ECTS, with 55 students and 6 teachers); the specialization will be aligned and tuned with national and international (Bologna) requirements and the quality will be internally and externally assessed;2. a virtual campus which is a multifunctional learning/communicating community, consisting a.o. of produced e-learning materials (virtual book etc.), online community;3. increased competences of teaching and technical staff, by cooperating in curriculum development/testing and in producing e-learning materialsTwelve partners, most of them already cooperating in a virtual class (VIRCLASS) consortium, will cooperate in a real team approach in SW-VirCamp. The impact they envisage includes the further dissemination to social work faculties (a.o. through the EUSW network), the development of the specialization into an international bachelor social work and to disseminate the Virtual Campus concept to non-social work stakeholders.
