Social Media & Adult Trainings

Project Social Media & Adult Trainings (SMAT) has utilised personal mobilities and ongoing discussions to provide a forum, in which adult education trainers can discuss the teaching applications of social media. European education policies have recognised the importance of keeping pace with new technical developments. As such, using social media in adult education is to be promoted via numerous initiatives. However, the current usage is far form what was intended. In many EU states, such as Romania, Bulgaria, Poland or Turkey, social media are rarely used, even in the realm of private life. In other countries, namely Germany, Spain, UK and Finland, they are widely used for private matters, but hardly in adult education. There is still, therefore, much to be done to establish the use of these new media in adult education.Eight institutions of european adult education have, within the framework of this learning partnership, collaborated on creating concepts for the application of social media in adult education courses. A first needs analysis showed how social media is currently beeing used within these eight european countries and the cultural aspects which may affect this usage. In later phases, the partners have jointly produced and tested a handbook, quality criteria and an example teaching unit, all based on social media. The partners come from countries which illustrate how widely social media usage differs. In certain countries social media are scarcely used, whilst in others they are already well established. This consortium has provided an environment where members have learnt from one another, experienced partners were able to share their knowledge and cultural aspects of social media usage have been uncovered together.
