SMARThouse through internet of things
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The world is changing rapidly and is facing great challanges as defined in the new 17 Unesco sustainable global goals. Our children must be prepared to take part in this process of change. This can only be achieved by continuously adapting our education in order to implement sustainable change in behaviour, social innovation and technological innovation in the curricula. The partners in this project are convinced that exchange of technological knowledge and experience and co-creation between different countries will enhance the education quality of each partner and make curricula more future proof (21st century skills).SMART-IoT is a strategic partnerschip of 3 technical secondary schools in Belgium, Slovakia and Norway, focussing on the exchange of good practices for the implementation of Internet of Things technology in the energy management of houses, making them more SMART. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical objects—in this project related to energy management of houses—that enables to collect and exchange data, allowing the objects to be sensed and controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure. This technology will realise a virtual connection between three practical setups (SMARTrooms) in the schools of the partnership, realising a real-life virtual SMARThouse. A lab setup of a livingroom in Norway, a greenhouse in Belgium and a kitchen in Slovakia will be connected using IoT, realising the SMARThouse with a global network of sensors and actuators with added intelligence and control and visualiation possibilities for secondary education students. The project is carried out transnationally to maximize the awareness that energy management is a global issue and to maximize the effect of remote sensing and control using IoT. The technology will be implemented for analysing of energy acquisition, consumpton and needs. Because energy management has cultural differences and different technologies are used in each country, a transnational cooperation with exchange of knowledge and experience will enrich the curricula in each country. The strategic partnership focusses on achieving following goals:- strenghtening key competences in the curricula of secundary technical education by introducing new technologies (e.g. IoT) in practical setups (SMARTrooms in Belgium, Slovakia and Norway), remotely connected to a SMARThouse.- arising of the awareness for students and teachers of technical orientation that they play a crucial role in the implementation of new technologies in order to reach the global sustainable goals (such as energy/climate and technological innovation). They will have a lifelong need to update their technological skills in this rapid evoluting society.- improving the social and intercultural competences of students and teachers and arising the awareness that global problems can only be solved by co-creation across nations. This goals will be realised through the exchange of good practices and knowledge available in the partner schools. Each partner will realise a part of the SMARThouse setup. Each SMARTroom will be connected using IoT to a remote SMARThouse and finally fully integrated in the curricula, allowing future students to apprentice the skills to use IoT to reduce energy consumption.During three training/learning/testing activities, two expert teachers from each partner will apply their knowledge and experience to upgrade and optimise the practical SMARTroom setup of the home partner and connect it to the SMARThouse configuration using IoT. Students from each partner will be able to test the setup and the developed materials. The learning effect will be measured and used as an input for the development of online educational material, that will be integrated in the curricula of the three partner schools.During the project, each partner organises local dissimination events for primary and secondary schools and industrial partners. At the end of the project, a broader dissimination event will take place in the coordinating school. On-line educational material will be made and dissiminated to a broader network of stakeholders.
