Slovak Online
Start date: Nov 1, 2009,

Learning foreign languages online is a standard choice for many learners. With Slovak, as one of the European national languages, no such opportunity exists. Interested learners do not have free online course available and need to take part in school courses. We believe that creating a free online course of Slovak language, thus offering opportunities to learn and practice it, is based on existing need for such tool and growing interest of learners to use progressive methods (like ICT) in learning. Such online portal will be targeted at foreigners living in Slovakia, partners in mixed marriages/relationships, people living in border areas with Slovakia, Slovaks living abroad and their extended families, students of Slovakian and Slavic studies from universities abroad, other students, tourists and interested others. The Slovak online course will: - Promote access to EU language that is not commonly thought and improve quality of materials for its learning;- Focus on content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and help teach and test people's new language skills; - Help introduce Slovakia, its culture and language;- Be prepared with the methodology based on the new Common European Framework for Languages of the Council of Europe;- Have multimedia content with interactive and engaging exercises, games, reading materials, audio and video tools, competitions, etc.;- Have chat rooms and discussion fora to allow for engagement with other users and tutors;- Be developed in 4 languages (English, German, Polish, Lithuanian). We envision following impact: - Improved access to learning Slovak language for wide audiences from and beyond Europe;- Available free online course that motivates and inspires by using engaging, interactive and user friendly tools; - Potential long-term commercial use (off-line version, ads on the site, etc.); - Improved understanding of Slovakia and its culture. - Interest to create such sites for other European languages.
