The project, A School at Crossroads, by Sund Upper Secondary School in Reykjavík, Iceland, is intended to enhance the professional school leadership skills, the action research, the teaching of history and library and information service within the school. The purpose is to facilitate the school to reach its aim of progressive schooling and learning that will make students more able to participate in a modern and an international environment. It is also the aim to enhance the staffs´ professional development to make them more able to actively participate in the transformation process of creating a new school´s curriculum with assignment based learning in the foreground, a system change that allows for a more flexible learning organisation and to utilize the new building extension of the school in the autumn 2015 when the new school´s curriculum will also be implemented. Four professional school managers intend to go on a study tour (job shadowing) to Denmark in February 2015 to visit upper secondary schools to learn about new developments in Danish schooling. The aim is to strengthen the school´s European cooperation in order to modernise the school with emphasis on assignment based learning and assessment for learning. This will also help in decreasing the students´ dropout rate in the school. The library and information scientist intends to go on a study tour (job shadowing) to visit a secondary school in Malmö, Sweden in the spring of 2015 and learn about the information service in general, information literacy teaching programs and its implementation. Four teachers from the action research group of the school intent to participate in an international conference in York in England in July 2014. There they will introduce their action research projects, learn about various international projects about teaching and learning and increase their competence of the research method of action research. Three history teachers intend to participate in the annual conference of Euroclio, the European Association of History Educators in April 2015 in Helsingör, Denmark. The emphasis will be on democracy and teaching and teachers from all over Europe will introduce their work, new methods in teaching and new teaching materials. It is very important for teachers to have an opportunity to learn about international trends in their professional field and make connections with European history teachers. All of the participants in the project, A school at Crossroads, will increase their competence in their professional field, increase their open mindedness, increase their language skills and create international connections with possibilities of further cooperation. The project provides new opportunities for professional development and enhances job satisfaction. The participants will introduce the results and their experience of the training courses to all staff members of the school and through that the project will produce a more competent staff to participate in the school´s changing process and enhance professional practice that again will lead to more competence and better achievement of the students.
