31st Primary School of Heraklion is a whole-day elementary school with 184 students and 18 teachers in the city centre. It hosts children from greek and foreign families. Our school has a great experience from participation in European programs: It has participated in two interschool partnerships Socrates Comenius programs (2001-2004 and 2010-2012). Since the school year 2014, it has been included in the European program Euronet 50-50 max which is supported by the European Commission. There have been realized programs of European orientation such as Teachers4Europe, many programs concerning school activities and by the school year 2015-16 it is included in two national thematic environmental education networks. The persons involved in the present application are five (5) teachers/educators of high academic qualifications, very good knowledge in handling New Technologies and good knowledge of the English language. That is they possess a good background to successfully complete this project. The title of our project is: “Museum – school cooperation, outdoor education and improvement of the quality of teaching”. Through this project we believe we can improve the quality of our teaching work making use of the benefits resulting from the school – museum cooperation and the introduction of innovative programs. Our city has museums of international reputation such as the Archaeological Museum, the Natural History Museum and many others which have a lot to offer with the proper cooperation and planning. Therefore a necessary condition is the training of our school teachers in how to make creative use of the Museum as educational resource and learning tool. We’ve selected two very significant educational programs with a many years experience and recognized quality which we believe will equip us with the most up-dated knowledge and skills. Our school is aiming at improving the quality of the provided education by introducing new teaching methodology and tools, by developing the personal skills of the teachers (with the implementation of innovative programs and the use of New Technologies), by enriching the curriculum and the organization of teaching – learning in informal learning places like museums. It’s also aiming at the opening of school to the local society and its internalization through partnerships with European institutions and schools. With the improvement of the quality of provided education we hold that we can find a way towards the solution of problems such as learning difficulties, incorporation of foreign students, issues of aggressive behaviour and conflicts between students, stimulation of the students’ interest. The activities that will take place during our European mobility and the methodology used, is attending presentations and theoretical information, museum presentation workshops, collecting sources for the production of group projects, group work, individual and group presentations, museum visits, monitoring work in museums, practical training of the participants, evaluation and validation of results etc. With the realization of this training we’re taking a first step towards our future participation in school partnerships either through a program ERASMUS KA2 or e- twinning..The results that we are expected to have are the improvement of the quality of teaching to the benefit of the students, the development of cooperation within a European frame, the awareness of a common European, scientific and cultural heritage. A significant impact is expected for the participating teachers, for the school itself, but also for all target groups, which are besides students, parents, the school community, the local community, the museums. The benefits that will come out from this cooperation concern both school and museum. For the museum the cooperation means the creation of a stable and active public and this in turn will bring increased resources for sustainability and growth of the organism. The benefits that will come out for the school are the development of motivation for active learning, the familiarization with the museum space and the “opening” of school and its communication with the world. We intend to carry out various activities for the dissemination of the results of the project outside our school, such as information and cooperation with other schools of our region, announcement in local daily workshop, publications in the school blog, website creation, publications in social media (there will be a special page created on facebook for this purpose), articles in newspapers and local media. Finally it is necessary to evaluate the achievement of our objectives that will be done through questionnaires and interviews to the group targets before and after the implementation of the project.
