SIGN-IT NOW: On-line Instruction of Basic Sign Language to the Emergency and Caring Services

The SIGN-IT-NOW project responds to the need of those employed in emergency and care services, to communicate with a growing number of hearing-impaired persons (up to 20% of the population in some countries). It aims to overcome barriers to training by developing the very first on-line training programme in sign languages specially geared to these services. Partner countries include popular tourist areas. The newly developed, on-line course will be an interactive and flexible learning tool to be available in all partner languages. Participants will be able to learn their mother-tongue sign language as well as those of other countries. Initial research will help focus content on frequently used vocabulary for firemen, doctors and other emergency and care services. A dedicated website will be created and promoted to relevant agencies, initially in partner countries but later across Europe. Thus, media, public agencies and networks of people with hearing difficulties will have access to reports and to the interactive learning tool. Press conferences in each partner country will further promote the final product.
