Showing teachers how to improve their digital literacy for better teaching and learning outcomes
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jul 1, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our institution, ‘Terra Santa College’ (School of the Holy Land), founded in 1646 is the oldest school in Cyprus. At this time and under such difficult circumstances, the College of Terra Santa managed to play an important role in the education of Cypriots. Four enthusiastic and ambitious teachers (an Italian teacher, an English teacher, a Music teacher and a primary school teacher) of our institution decided to work together and prepare a project in order to apply for the first time in the Erasmus project. The most important criteria for the selection of these teachers were the teacher’s profile and educational background, their professional experience in certain areas, their need for further improvement in the specific field that this mobility project addresses and their desire and enthusiasm in participating in the placement and gaining as much as possible out of their training in the proposed mobility project. Although our teachers of all subjects are motivated and hardworking, unfortunately they lack ICT competences. The reason why we want to be part of the Erasmus+ community is to improve our teaching methodologies in ICT which is the area where all teachers feel disadvantaged in relation to other schools. We want to make our subject fields more attractive for our students, trying to bring their increase their motivation and to take advantage of the education they receive, which will benefit them in their future academic and/or professional prospects. After an enormous investigation in finding the most appropriate training course to attend we chose an extremely interesting and exciting course in Ireland. Our school has a long history and importance in our society and it is sad that our teachers don't have the suitable equipment and knowledge regarding ICT, in order to facilitate our students with modern and exciting activities. We are in need of teaching training which will help us develop our skills and become the best possible teachers. We have high goals for our institution, aiming to achieve excellence in teaching and learning. Our higher goal is for our school to be one of the best schools in our country, with well trained staff and students that feel lucky to be part of our community. We want to offer as much as possible to our students. Last but not least, the longer term goal, after having some experience in the Erasmus+ project, is to become a training center. Our main activity will be attending the ‘The Digital Classroom - Helping European teachers become digitally literate’ course in Ireland. This course enables teachers to become quickly digitally literate, confident and competent enough to create a collaborative, interactive classroom experience for their students. Teachers will have the opportunity to learn best practices in teaching and learning, using ICT. Participants will attend a number of interactive, hands-on workshops and group-work sessions on a range of programmes including Weebly, Prezi, Wordle, Scratch, Schoology, Audacity and many more. As a school, we intend to assist participants’ dynamic involvement in order to ensure the relevance of their training outcomes to their project by organizing workshops or seminars with which they will address the rest of the teaching staff. Their main aim will be to “spread the word” about their experience and knowledge gained from the training course “The Digital Literacy in the collaborative classroom”. Our teachers will be guided in order to implement the skills and pedagogical methodologies they will learn in this course. It will provide linguistic and inter-cultural preparation to our staff and it will take the form of an on-line meeting or a webinar between the trainees and the trainer of the destination country. The receiving training organization will introduce all the participants to the subject matter of the course by providing them with information and assistance for mobility in Ireland. As a school, we are planning to implement these undertakings which will lead into creating a new dimension of our school, changing methods of work and motivating students. The impact which this will have on students, the staff and the school overall can be wider in the sense of promoting and implementing all information gathered with the purpose of enhancing and improving the status of the school. By getting in contact with other European schools and institutions, our teaching staff will be able to overcome any difficulties or barriers by working in a liable team of well-motivated people. We aim towards a new and improved appearance of the school, with staff that feels confident about their knowledge and teaching abilities in ICT. Nowadays, all subject areas need to incorporate ICT in the classroom. Now is the right time to do our best to be a part of such an important and innovative programme like Erasmus+ in order to fulfill our dreams for our institution.
