Share Trekking Experience Promoting Self-awareness
Start date: Aug 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project S.T.E.P.S.- Share Trekking Experience Promoting Self-awareness is a pilot model for itinerant exchange on the themes of intercultural learning, group dynamics and the promotion of self-awareness in a context of social inclusion. S.T.E.P.S. will take place from the 15th to the 23rd of September 2016 and involve 32 youngsters aged 19-13 and 5 group leaders coming from Italy, Estonia, Spain, Croatia and Czech Republic in non-formal education and trekking activities along the Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park. The main goal is to implement the typical activities of an international exchange, in particular intercultural learning and group dynamics, inside an innovative framework composed by a more-than-one-day trekking on the Appennine, where participants with fewer opportunities, above all NEET (Not engaged in Education, Employment or Training) will be involved. S.T.E.P.S. idea arises from the need of offering to NEET and in general to youngsters with fewer opportunities, a new experience, far away from daily life, where thank to physical exercise, self reflection and team work they’ll be able to give themselves daily goals and put themselves to the test. In this way, we wish that their participation in this youth exchange will encourage them to undertake a path towards inclusion in their own community. The project strategy is based on the alternance of reflection moments, non-formal education activities (workshop, teambuilding, intercultural activities), direct experience of trekking and hiking and team work in service activities at the mountain lodges and for food and camping preparation. Partipants will indeed live a parallel orienteering path with the aim of increasing their self awareness and their adaptation capacities through non formal education activities. S.T.E.P.S. specific goals are:to contribute to the development of participants’ awareness and confidence in their own competences and skillsto give participants the opportunity to reflect on their relation with the groupto contribute to th improvement of participants’ adaptation to new contexts and situationsto test group dynamics in a new contextto help participants understanding the importance of their choices, sharing their ideas and discussing them in an active and proactive wayto promote participants’ intercultural learningto stimulate participants’ attitude to cooperation and team work through service activities at mountain lodges, food and camping preparationto give participants the opportunity to live an enriching experience far from daily life and in an intercultural environmentto stimulate participants’ spirit of initiative through the preparation of activities prior to the exchange and their active participation in the exchangeto offer the opportunity to partner organizations and participants to learn new tolls and skills that would be put into place in other local or international projects, promoting follow-up activities in their contexts of origin to increase participants’ knowledge of trekking and camping techniquesto contribute to the development of an European consciousnessto promote Erasmus+ Program activities and goals.S.T.E.P.S. project features will enable it to be an important experience for the growth of its participants, who are facing fewer opportunities. Living an experience that combines a trekking on the mountains, service activities to the local community, intercultural learning and a focus on self awareness, will definetely have a strong impact on the participants who will be encouraged every moment to take a challenge and learn to know themselves and the others. Thank to the close collaboration with partners and with local community and to the dissemination activities, both on a local and European level, S.T.E.P.S. will enable participant organizations and local communities to know an innovative tool for working with youngsters with fewer opportunities and to replay it in other international projects. Concerning P.E.CO.’s long term vision, S.T.E.P.S. implementation will enable us to test and reply our pilot model with the specific target of the NEET, with whom we are working both in local context and through the belonging to an European network.
