Shape - Young Disability Access Explorers
Start date: Jan 3, 2011,
Disabled and non-disabled young people aged 15-25 from London, Liverpool and Manchester come together at a high profile arts venue to explore disability access issues. Through a range of audience-based and participatory techniques, and through engaging access practitioners and experts, young people explore the issues faced by young disabled audiences in accessing the arts, to infgorm policy around disability access. On Days 1 and 2, disabled participants train as disability access explorers, exploring access issues at arts venues, and encouraging them to use their own experience of barriers to help improve access for others. On Day 2, disabled and non-disabled young people meet as arts audiences for an accessible arts performance or artists talk, to inspire a debate around the issues, and to encourage exchange between disabled and non-disabled young people. On Day 3, young participants engage access officers, practitioners, policy-makers and experts to debate the issues. There will be a viewing of an arts performance demonstrating good practice in performances integrating access - working with both disabled and non-disabled actors, for both disabled and non-disabled audiences. During Policy Discussion groups, young people discuss the issues with experts, to inform youth-led policy on disability access, with the findings from the 3 days to be disseminated to the UK and EU.
