Senior abroad - an Experience of a Lifetime

‘4ever Active’ was a Grundtvig Senior Project developed jointly by two partners from Portugal and Italy who aimed to compensate for role changes and attenuate social relations that usually occur with ageing and to promote a positive effect on social psychological factors, such as personal sense of purpose and accomplishment, a sense of usefulness and personal fulfillment. Senior Volunteering abroad was also a full non-formal learning experience. On the other, we aimed to promote intergenerational work, enhancing this way the active ageing and the relationships and learning between different generations and specially involving youngsters with special needs. Besides Intergenerational learning, acquiring foreign language skills were further aspects, which can be enhanced by this project. The target group, six Portuguese and six Italian volunteers, were adults over 50, retired and employed people, with special talents or knowledge to be shared, such as handicraft, cooking, cultural knowledge, etc. They worked mostly in institutions for children from low income families and also in eldery associations. The project also aimed to facilitate a better understanding of common European values and European history, by having senior volunteers sharing their personal and professional life experience with young people from another EU country. This partnership also allowed the sharing of good practices related to senior volunteering service and volunteering organizations. The activities developed had also in mind the achievement of a crucial goal among the EC priorities for 2011 and 2012 that were the European Year ‘of Volunteering work’ and ‘of Active aging and intergenerational solidarity’, respectively.
