"Self made bed cover - Forest"
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Youth exchange project "Self made bed cover - Forest" between Poland and Latvia is going to take place in Lizums, Latvia. The theme of the project is art and culture thought the nature, getting the inspiration from the forest. The topic is very actual at the moment. Forests in Latvia also produce the main export goods - wood. In recent years, our forests are shrinking rapidly not only in Latvia but also in other EU countries. We would like to draw a wider public attention to this problem. As the youth is our future their opinion is very important to us. Discussions with young people learning their attitude toward the situation is also part of our project. Forests form a part of the identity of our country and art is the visual language which helps us to express the ideas transforming them into an art work. The graphic art technique chosen seems to us the most suitable and exciting way for youngsters to express themselves and to get a deeper understanding of cultural identity and the similarities and differences between both participating countries. We have chosen this method to have an inter-cultural dialogue using graphic art as a tool. The art has no borders that is why we have chosen this approach to look at inter-cultural identity. The goal is not only to get to know different graphic techniques and create an innovative way of classic graphic press technique by carving the wood plates and using the road roller to print the new designs on fabric. We see it as a beautiful peaceful way of looking deeper into our routes and different backgrounds. From the printed fabrics we will make self made design duvet covers which will be carrying a story of different culture identities. Participants will have a nice self made unique design bed cover to take home. We see the Forest as meditative place, as multiplicity of forms and colors, as life, as a place of inspiration, as a symbol of peace. During the project we will get closer to the nature, will look for inspiration in the peace of the forest, participants will get new knowledge about the treasures of nature while visiting the Latvian forests. The forest has so much to offer but unfortunately our hurried rhythm of life takes too much of our time and energy that sometimes we do not realize that the best things in life are not always sold in the supermarket. The aim of the project is to encourage young people from two different countries to work together, to share and exchange cultural, language and experience differences and similarities. Project includes the involvement of local community. Poland as a partner country has been chosen for two main reasons. One is for the previous cooperation and secondly Poland is the graphic 'mecca' of Europe. Poland has strong historical routes in graphic art and design which Latvian participants can learn a lot from. The project aims also to promote Latvian and Poland graphic art awareness and visibility, so the project is designed also to reach wider public. This project is going to involve 22 young people form 18-30 years. During 12 day exchange they are going to work on ideas, discuss, present, work in mixed groups and workshops producing the final product - the bed covers. Graphic print will be presented in public show during the closing event.
