"Se mettre au vert : maraîchage biologique et sensibilisation à l'écocitoyenneté" / "Outdoor Green - Biological Gardening and environmental awareness"
Start date: Jun 17, 2014, End date: Feb 16, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Keywords for this project : Environmental awareness, creativity and active citizenship. The project is based on an intercultural youth exchange of european volunteers that will happen during Summer 2014: several groups of young adults (from 16 to 20 years old) from different countries and belonging to the international movement "Service Civil International" will gather together during 12 days in Northern France, in the city of Wambrechies and around, to take part in activities linked to environmental awareness. The different nationalities will be: France, Bulgaria, Spain and Italy, with 4 participants and 1 campleader per nationality plus one local project coordinator, that is a total group of 21 persons. The hosting organization SCI Région Nord member of the international network of SCI, is also involved in social and professional inclusion of youngsters with fewer opportunities from 18 to 25 years old. We have developed in Lille a programme to support reintegration into the workforce via economical activities ("work-school" or "chantier-école" in french) and among these is our "biological garden workcamp" : The "garden team" works all year long on a farmland located in the city of Wambrechies (20 minutes from Lille), which belongs to the french association Emmaüs. The land has a 5000 m² area and has two greenhouses of 145 m² for seeding and winter farming. Agricultural methods used here respect the techniques of biological farming (our products are all labelled with "Organic Certification"): no pesticides, use of biological fertilizer, manual weeding... In the land it's also possible to work on hedge pruning, grass mowing, flower clumps caring, and even discover beekeeping as we own several beehouses. This Youth Exchange is aimed for youngsters who never had an experience of mobility, because of lack of independance, resources, training and/or information. Theses youngsters are chosen by our partners with the social structures they work with all year long in their respectives countries. This summer exchange is based on two types of activities : - Workshops of thoughts and exchanges on environmental awareness, scenes which favour ideas sharing ; practical workshops in order to build exhibition panels ; - On some days the youngsters will take part in the "biological gardening work-school" with our technical leader (who works with adults in professional inclusion): weeding, repoting seeds and plants, harvesting, maintaining of lands and greenhouses, helping in preparation of vegetables for their transport and delivery, helping in preparation of stalls for our weekly "Biological Market"... As SCI owns some beehouses, they will also have the chance to discover beekeeping with our professional beekeeper and take part with him in harvesting and preparing honey. Apart from this, play activities and cultural and intercultural activities will be organized by the campleaders and the project coordinator. Through enviromental protection a theme which concerns not only Europe but the entire world and based on ideas and thoughts sharing also thanks to experts interventions, youngsters will be encouraged to express their own opinion and listen to and respect the other person's opinions. This will encourage personal well-being, promote open-mindedness and fight cultural prejudices. This is the whole significance of the exchange : share, discover, understand cultural differences in order to favour respect and tolerance.
