Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

At Charles Dickens Primary School we teach French from reception to year 6, an hour a week in KS2 and half an hour a week in KS1 and Early Years. French is taught by a native speaker and language specialist. Our objective is to train "key leaders" in each phase to raise the profile of language teaching. We want to increase these leaders' confidence in delivering a language lesson and extend their subject knowledge. These leaders would then disseminate their knowledge and experience within their phase, being an extra reference person for languages. This would make up a team of 4 teachers around our specialist teacher Lucile. They will be able to deliver extra discrete language lesson during the week raising the profile of French in our school. We believe it is extremely important for the children to see their class teacher being on board with learning a language. Class teachers are children's role model, the discrete lessons which will result from this training will massively impact on children's learning and attitude towards language learning. We wish to train 4 languages leaders, one from each phase: early years, KS1, lower KS2 and upper KS2. The four of them are class teachers. They are a mixture of experienced teachers and NQTs.We believe sending the same 4 teachers several times on courses in France will have a much more significant impact on our school than sending more members of staff on a one off basis. We are convinced that the road of language learning, no matter the age of the learner, is made easier by practising again and again and again. By sending this team of 4 teachers consistently, we are giving them a real opportunity to master the skills of language teaching and, this way, giving them a chance to make a strong impact on our language provision at Charles Dickens. We want to send these 4 leaders on 3 languages courses in France in order to make them confident in their language skills. We believe a mixture of French lessons and culture experience will help greatly increase the leaders' language competence. The training of these 4 leaders will be supported by our specialist French teacher through twilight evenings which will be organized prior to the first course and consolidation sessions will happen for the entire duration of the two year project, giving the teachers the best chances at improving their language skills and growing their confidence. Our aim for the project is to create 4 strong language leaders who will be able to help and lead, within their phase, the teaching of discreet language lessons. It is part of a wider plan of raising the profile of French in our school and increasing greatly our language provision sustainability. It is also part of our school development plan to develop personal CPD.We are currently undertaking action research in many other areas of the curriculum and we will undertake an action research for this project to monitor and ensure that training these 4 leaders will significantly impact on our language provision and lead to higher outcomes. At Charles Dickens Primary School we are the lead school of the Southwark Teaching Schools Alliance so we would share this model and our findings with our partner schools. We are also an Initial Teacher Training provider so we would provide additional MFL training to students across 6 schools in our partnerships. This will increase the sustainability of the project. The impact and long term benefit from this project will be a stronger language team, more teachers trained and confident to teach a language lesson and overall a higher profile for French at Charles Dickens Primary School.
