Start date: Dec 1, 2012,

The project aims to foster school and social integration of migrant children through language learning by migrant and native families of the same comprehensive school and collaborative activities of teachers and (migrant and native) parents. Language teaching will be performed with the Narrative Format approach (Taeschner 2005), a methodology resulted from previous EU projects, the theoretical basis of the materials known as “Hocus & Lotus”. This methodology proved to be effective for FL learning in pre-primary, primary schools and family. Specific goals are: - Identifying and deconstructing negative attitudes towards different ethnic groups, migrant students, intercultural integration and multilingualism in teachers and parents - Teaching the host country language in comprehensive classes with migrant and native children - Teaching the host country language to migrant parents in their child’s school by the teacher - Sensitizing native children and teachers to the origin’s language of the migrant children - Increasing the use of cooperative and collaborative learning practices in class - Increasing the parent – teacher relationship. These objectives will be reached during three years: - First year: update of the seminar for the partners on the Narrative Format Approach for teaching languages to children and intercultural aspects, construction of SHAFT website, development of SHAFT guide for parents in host country and migrant languages, development of the training program for the teachers, involvement and selection of 8 comprehensive schools in 5 European countries and training of 16 teachers in selected schools for each country. - Second year: tutoring and coaching of the 40 SHAFT schools and about 800 migrant and native families in the project activities and data collection for research, elaboration of the SHAFT-school guide. - Third year: exploitation of the SHAFT project to other 40 classes of the SHAFT schools and valorization and dissemination of the Project results.
