School Adoption in Teacher Education
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2019 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aim of the SATE project is to bridge the existing gap between schools and teacher education by the development of an effective and innovative model for internships that strengthens collaboration between practice and the academic world. School adoption is a win-win situation. Student teachers take over a school for a week and learn by doing. They get the opportunity to test in practice their academic knowledge supported by a mentor. School teachers can participate in professional development classes during this week in order to strengthen their skills and competences. They will learn how to act as co-educators for student teachers. The cost of school adoption is low and it increases quality in education. Student teachers, teacher educators and school teachers from the participating countries (Denmark, Germany, Norway and Russia) are the main participants in the project but many stakeholders, as pupils in schools, parents, national authorities, etc., are concerned by the project. The SATE project will be conducted by partners from the international Tequila network (Teacher Education: Quality through integrating Research and Learning). Thereby a strong network in teacher education in the participating countries is ensured which will be important for the project's impact and sustainability at a local, national and international level. Different activities will be carried out in the project. Six intellectual outputs are targeted – guidelines for the adoption model, video with authentic statements etc., evaluation report, book ‘school adoption for all’, an online platform to share all material and knowledge, and finally dissemination activities such as articles, news letters, press releases. Multiplier events will contribute to the development and the dissemination of these outputs. Six transnational project meetings will take place for all project partners, one meeting every six months. Every university partner is responsible for at least one main intellectual output in order to share the responsibility of a successful project. However, all partners contribute to the development of the six intellectual outputs. The SATE project will have an important impact in teacher education at a local, national and international level. Participants, school authorities and stakeholders will have the chance to examine to what extent school adoption is a realistic and manageable method to increase quality in practical experience for student teachers, and furthermore in teacher education as a whole. In addition, the results of the project will lead to new perspectives on teacher education, how to qualify student mentors for example. Throughout the project, networks and partnerships with universities and schools will grow and school adoption will consequently be implemented in more teacher education programmes in a long-term perspective. This is very important for the sustainability of the project and its results.
