Savoirs et saveurs en Pays Midi-Quercy
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Jan 31, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project is carried out in the context of a collaboration between 3 non governmental organisations: - An association of popular education and rural development located in France, department of Tarn-et-Garonne, - A day shelter center for mentally disable people, also located in Tarn-et-Garonne - A vocational training center for vulnerable or weakened people, located in Genova, Italia. These 3 partner groups already achieved 2 exchanges of young disable people, in 2011 and 2012. They've decided to repeat the experience with other youngsters because these exchanges proved to be extremely rich for participants but also for accompagnying people. Our project consists in an exchanged of 11 days between two groups of mentally handicapped young adults, one Italian and another French. The 18 participants are all affected by behavior disorder and/or intellectual deficiency. The supervision of the group will be performed by qualified professionals : 5 specialist teachers and 2 counselors. Considering the handicap of the participants, this professional frame is necessary not only to ensure safety of the group, organization and logistics, but also to make sure that each participant is allowed to find his place into the group and can actively take part in the experience. This project took place in south-west of France, in the departments of Aveyron (12), Tarn (81), Tarn-et-Garonne ( 82 ). It is built on 3 main types of activities : - Educational activites about food and healthy diet : how to prepare a balanced meal, learning about different types of food and how they are produced, make the difference between an industrial product and a farmer / traditional one... - Local heritage discovering: learning about the gastronomy of south-west France by preparing traditional meals, visiting medieval villages and remarkable natural or historical sites; - Cooperation activities improving one's living together, and allowing to take advantages from individual complementarities : team jobs, helping one another, mediation, collective games... This project was aimed at : - Allowing these young people to live a new experience which allows them to cope with their fear of unknown situations and to increase their social autonomy. - Raising their awareness of the stakes of healthy and balanced diet. Having them improve their everyday autonomy concerning food. - Allow them to assess European dimension by travelling, and discovering new language, cultures and landscapes.
