In our school Westdiep, situated at the Belgian coast, 250 pupils with 50 different origins are keen to come to school. The teachers put great efforts in dealing with the challenges of this diversity. We can be proud of the results that we obtain. Diversity in our school is nothing new, but we want to continue reflecting on the challenges facing education today. We are convinced of the quality of our education in Flanders. But giving equal opportunities to all pupils is not easy as we have to work with inclusion, broad evaluation, ... Recently co-teaching became an answer for how to teach heterogenic groups. We signed for a pilotproject co-teaching at our school, but we feel the need to see examples that can convince us and show us results. For that we get a look abroad: in Denmark teachers have experiences for over 30 years with co-teaching. Our teachers will be observing the methods of working with co-teaching and their organizational structures. They will explore the way in which new challenges are dealt with abroad.Next to a dialogue with other teachers in Denmark, there will be a dialogue with the pupils too. This will be done through activities and a visual presentation on the site and by exchanging video messages over the internet, pupils all over Europe will be brought closer to each other.Our experiences and results will be posted on to the school’s website. Meaningful visual material will be uploaded on YouTube and there will be a brochure available at the end of the project. This way, our school can be contacted by other schools with similar needs. This will be available on www.westdiep.be.The most important objective we want to obtain with this project is sharing expertise and experiences to be able to motivate as many pupils as possible. Every child should have the chance to develop his or her talents so it can look the future in the eyes with confidence.
