PROJECT
FINISHED
The Montecanal School is a bilingual public primary school located in Zaragoza, Spain. Currently, our school has a student body of 700, between the ages of 3-12 and a staff of 55 teachers. Our school is involved in the bilingual project and our students use an integrated Spanish-English curriculum. The students are taught the following classes in English, applying the CLIL learning method: Arts and Crafts, Social and Natural Science and Music (from Year 4-Year 6). They also have the subject Literacy as part of their daily core studies. With the objective to improve and amplify our professional development in linguistic competences, acquire new knowledge and focus on new methodologies, the main goals for the staff at Montecanal School is to:-ensure that we as teachers are dynamic and active in the teaching process, avoiding that our classrooms and teaching methods become routine and static. -improve the European dimension by opening our school to Europe, learning from our fellow Europeans. It is also hoped that other countries may learn from the things that we do. This way, our project will benefit not only our school, but the wider education community.-improve the linguistic competence, as our school uses an integrated British Council-MEC curriculum which means that more than 50% of the subjects taught in the school are given in a foreign language.-improve the methodology and develop new methodology skills for all of the areas taught in English (Arts and Crafts, Social and Natural Science, Music and Literacy). It the subject of Literacy which can be the most challenging subject to teach due to the lack of teaching training courses available in Spain.-improve the digital competence, learn about new tools of communication and learn how to apply those tools to new Etwinning projects, As well as with understanding more about digital material, apply it to projects or work done by our students. The participants who propose the implementation of this project are primary education teachers, who are mainly English teachers, the majority of them tutors. They have an ample amount of experience and play a vital role in the school, as well as in the activities and educational projects organized by the school. The activities that we are applying for are the following:-a teacher training course held at the University of Limerick, summer program.-a teacher training course held at the University of Dublin, summer program.-job shadowing in an Irish primary school (communication has already been established with the school).-a course of educational visits to primary schools located in Helsinki, Finland. In order to be able to carry out this project, we consider it important to start with a methodology which is active and open to multilateral communication between teachers from diverse areas. We will also follow up with an in-depth reflection in which we will provide practical context for the training received by the teachers in our school as well as sharing things learned with our fellow teachers. With this project, we are looking for certain changes at different levels:-on a personal level we hope to acquire new techniques and knowledge in the teaching of languages as well as in new technologies. We also hope to be better prepared at the methodology level with the appropriate linguistic competence. -as a school, we would like to establish a space where all of the staff that teach a foreign language are able to share these experiences and establish an specific English methodology program that best fits the school.-at the international level, we would like to establish links with schools and European teachers that would enable future KA2 projects, where we might also be able to work together with schools in which we have already established successful links (Pikemere Primary School in the UK which is our link school as well as two elementary schools located in the United States). We clearly appreciate the fact that by participating in a project with these qualities, we will be able to internationalize our practical teaching skills and Europeanize our classrooms. Our final aim is to convert ourselves into appropriate educational tools in order to motivate our students, globalize their expectations and make them to be competent in the construction of their lifelong learning process.
