Rural Mobility from Coast to Coast 2
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Target group of “Mobility from Coast to Coast 2”, a two-year IVT mobility project, are twenty students in the final stage of their qualification, which is organised in the dual system. Upon qualifying, they will be able to work in a variety of occupational fields, from processing wood and metal to car mechanics and electrical engineering. As part of their education, these students will, divided into two groups roughly equal in size, complete a placement abroad; group one is expected to fly out to Spain for four weeks in the early summer of 2015; the second group will then follow for an equal amount of time in the early summer of 2016. At that point in time, all students will be attending the vocational college “Berufsbildende Schulen 2” in Aurich, situated in the far northwest of Germany in a region called Ostfriesland, or East Frisia, close to the Dutch-German border. This region has the reputation of being a somewhat “backwater“ countryside, which is the reason why “Mobility from Coast to Coast” will be a first for the majority of the students in terms of going – and even working - abroad. It will certainly benefit their personal development, and might, by broadening their horizons, just influence their job-related decisions in the future, perhaps motivating them to try out working, for a limited or unlimited period of time, in a country other than their native Germany. Participants are selected by a panel consisting of both representatives of the vocational college in Aurich and of the respective training companies. Throughout the selection process, excellent interpersonal skills are valued higher than the level of theoretical knowledge displayed within a school setting. This is supposed to ensure the deployment of interested and motivated students, who will be received positively by their colleagues in Spain and therefore contribute to the success of this project. Following the selection process, participants will attend a weekend seminar at the Europahaus Aurich to prepare for the intercultural aspects of their placement. In addition to this, basic Spanish will be taught at their vocational college. Tasks and responsibilities regarding supervision and logistics are evenly distributed between the Berufsbildenden Schulen 2 in Aurich and their Spanish partner school, the IES Aljade in Puente Tocinos, Murcia. Student groups from Murcia will later pay visit to East Frisia in return. In addition to gaining their first experience with working abroad, participants will be able to enhance their job-specific practical knowledge. We expect our students to gain knowledge of working with different techniques, methods, and standards, use different materials and adhere to safety measures and ecological regulations that might differ from those in their training companies at home. They will see a different corporate culture and a different approach to training and will familiarize themselves with alternatives to German marketing strategies. For the duration of their placements, the overwhelming majority of students will be working in a company setting, and are encouraged to “team up” with Spanish trainees during the length of their stay. It will be rare for German students to be placed in schools. Aurich and the surrounding region of East Frisia are trying to compensate for the lack of skilled workers by specifically recruiting workers from Spain; the project will enhance the understanding of East Frisian locals for the situation of those workers, and will sensitise them for their problems and fears. During their return visit to East Frisia, Spanish students are encouraged to ask themselves if working abroad for a longer period of time could, in their personal opinion, be considered an alternative to working in Spain. Depending on the success of the project, the vocational college in Aurich will consider establishing projects of the same kind with partners in other regions to bring a certain level of internationality to an otherwise rather isolated region.
