Rural is Plural
Start date: May 2, 2016, End date: Jan 1, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project takes place in Medinaceli, a small village in Soria (central Spain), with a high rate of depopulation that has led to a population density of around 4 people per square kilometre. It is an iconic place from the historical and architectural point of view, with a natural set influenced by the hills and valleys of the Jalón river and its tributaries, surronded by nature and away from the madding crowd. It is also a big tourist centre, as it crossed by two main national roads that make it a meeting place with high potential and good communication with the big cities nearby (Madrid, Zaragoza and Soria) by direct bus.In this context, our main goal is to support and empower local youth as the main stakeholder of rural legacy making them protagonists of the local development. Our activities focus on education in the values of environmental and social sustainability and in the development aof social innovation tools that let us stimulate active citizenship. We promoted together with other local organizations the creation of a community centre in a public space provided by the Council for the implementation of educational and cultural activities. The project involves 3 volunteers that will integrate and support the local community, supporting the activities lead by the organization, while they will have the chance to propose new ones. During their stay they will help in the organic farm and take part in the environmental awareness activities, and enjoy with the alternative leisure, working specially with children and young people. These are some examples of the tasks where the volunteer is expected to get involved:- Organic gardening- Support agro-ecologic workshops and activities- Intergenerational activities with the local community- Promote environmental awareness- Multicultural evenings: gastronomy, literature, films…- Linguistic exchanges- Arts and creativity- Erasmus+ projects support- Alternative and sustainable leisure- Help with logistics and administration- Impulse active citizenshipThe volunteers are expected to be active and motivated people, who agree with the organization values and would like to get deeper in the rural eco movement, experiencing and sharing time and life with others. No previous knowledge of language or technical expertise is required. The methodology proposed is to create a learning personal plan for each volunteer, and to combine diverse kind of activities, in order to make their experience as much complete as possible. They will combine practical activities with others more administratives and will have the opportunity to design new activities, stimulating their creativity and entrepreneurship sense. The impact of the project will be the volunteers' personal growth and their learning of crativity enterpreneurship tools. Between the organizations involved there will be a strengthening of their partnership and in the local and regional level it will be an opportunity for intercultural exchange for local youth and for collectives with fewer opportunities. It will also spread the values and opportunities associated to Erasmus+, and enlarging the amount of people who would be potentially interested in continuing with future projects. On the long run it will contribute to the intercultural exchange and to the promotion of european values in a marginalized area, reducing its isolation.
