Rural Development Connection (RDC )

The project focused on the sustainable development of rural areas as places to live and work, fighting against current problems in the countryside like depopulation, degradation, loss of jobs, brain drain, over aging population and insufficient infrastructure and supporting of rural tourism as one of the few business sectors in the rural areas with potentials. Achievements: The project led to improvement in the local rural infrastructure, esp. cycling, hiking and riding paths, waterways and infrastructure in harbours/marinas in Sweden, Germany and Denmark.Number of thematic rural tourism products were developed like: cycle tours and hiking path in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, riding path Neustadt-Dosse-Redefin, data bank with horse riding farms and riding paths for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern under www.reiten-in-mv.de or riding and hiking guides in Lolland-Falster, list of Open village churches, sport fishing and ecotourism products in Sweden etc.The project was also very successful in creation of job opportunities and offering education for entrepreneurs: 207 business ideas has been created and documented within the project, several tailored training packages in developing/marketing tourism businesses took place, number of tourist seminars has been carried outTourism for handicapped was also one of the activity in focus: a handicap ramp in Holeby municipality was built and a catalogue "Holidays with the wheelchair in the Baltic Sea area" was printed (30.000 copies)Project has worked on strategies for rural development and networking and elaborated a concept: "Strategies to safeguard an infrastructure meeting the requirements for the future as a contribution to a sustainable rural development".
