RoboParty Exchange
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Most youth today are enthusiastic users and consumers of information technology. They hardly remember a time when there was no Internet, e-mail, mobile phones, or digital media. Our objective in this project activity was to to encourage and enthuse young people, with Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, (STEM) using an established and proven non-formal eduction method - "RoboParty", that emphasises active problem-solving with intelligent technology to put youth in the role of creating and designing with technology—not just using and consuming it. RoboParty is an event where teams of young people learn skills and experiences by building a robot and in turn programming it to compete in inter-team competitions. This RoboParty takes place annually at the University of Minoh, Guimaraes - Portugal. At the time of writing the application in 2014 a key objective of the Programme for Government 2011-15 authored by the Northern Ireland Executive stated that they would like to " increase uptake in economically relevant Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) places" within the local education and training system. Through this project, by attracting youth in a non-formal education scenario, the activity of this youth exchange was to start to achieve such an outcome at the grass roots level in an exchange that would act as a catalyst to attract youth to a career path or education path in STEM subjects. As a long term goal is it proposed that the RoboParty is exported from Portugal for the first time and run in our College so that a wider range of youth within the region can participate and gain from the skills and experiences afforded to these youth participants.
