ROBIN- Reinforcing cOmpetences to Build Inclusion through a New learning methodology

Children enrolled in second chance schools are mostly underqualified early-school leavers, who do not have access to employment and lack basic social skills to adequately integrate into society, thus making them more vulnerable and exposed to abuse, exploitation and trafficking. Many of them have migrant background, as mentioned in the European Commission report of 2013 ‘Preventing Early School Leaving in Europe – Lessons Learned from Second Chance Education’: “Young people from migrant backgrounds are more likely to be early school leavers then native young people (25.6% vs. 11.6%)”. In order to prevent these children also dropping out of second chance classes, there is a need for simulative teaching methodologies to support educators working with them. With this project we aim to address these needs by developing an innovative learning methodology that will reinforce educators’ capacities to support children on the move enrolled in second chance programmes to complete their education and integrate successfully into society. The objectives of the projects are: 1. Developing an integrated learning methodology that ensures active learning, coaching and support by means of psychosocial activities; 2. Improving the social, technical, personal and methodological competences of adult educators; 3. Equipping educators with tools to enhance their capability to specifically support children on the move while enrolled in second chance classes; 4. Building a network of educators from second chance programmes to cooperate and exchange best practices. The project targets educators from second chance programmes, with a specific focus on those working with children on the move that come from disadvantaged groups, such as Roma or other ethnic minorities. A number of 10 adult educators will be prepared to train 600 educators. They will strengthen the psychosocial skills of the educators working with children on the move. Consequently, an estimated number of 5000 children on the move and from marginalized communities will change their attitude towards the others and willing to help each other, they will build the self-confidence, expressing themselves more freely, they will improve their relationships with adults due to an appropriate working methodology, to new activities and to being listened to. The main output of the project is an integrated learning methodology based on experiential learning by means of psychosocial activities. The activities within the project: For the development of O1- “Research study on the current methodologies used within second chance programme”, partners will conduct a desk research (current reports, studies, guides) and interview 5 persons directly involved in elaboration of the curricula at national level (e.g decision makers). At the same time, the research will include also an analysis of the best practices at national level, but also extracted from EU funded projects. For the development of O2- “Needs analysis report of educators to better support the social inclusion of children on the move”, a focus group discussion will be organized with 10 educators and by filling in needs analysis questionnaires (online survey) by 50 people. In total, 300 educators will be consulted. For O3- “Curriculum of the integrated learning methodology that addresses the needs of educators”, the project manager and one trainer from each of the partner organizations will meet during a 2 day workshop organized in Sofia together with the second partners meeting. For O4- “The integrated learning methodology based on experiential learning by means of psychosocial activities (pilot version)”, a Training Of Trainers will be organized in order to ensure the correct transferability of the innovative methodology. The Training of trainers will be organized together with the third partners meeting having a duration of 3 days, involving the project manager and 2 trainers from each organization. The 2 trainers from each country, will then pilot the new methodology in each country with 20 educators for 3 days. After the development of O5-“ Final version of the integrated learning methodology”, it will be delivered by the 2 trainers of each partner country to 100 educators per country (5 sessions in total/country of 3 days). O6- “Handbook of Robin methodology” The handbook will comprise all the training modules of the developed integrated learning methodology together with examples and best practices derived from the implementation in all partner countries. This handbook is a useful tool for other adult educators who train not only educators, but also other people who come in contact with children on the move such as school directors, caregivers, child care professionals, social workers.
