The title of the project, we are going to realize in Riga English Grammar School, is Using CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) to improve the process and content of learning. The goal is to master the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology more efficiently and implement it in the learning process, so promoting students’ overall competitiveness in Europe, and to improve the usage of the language and new competences for both students and teachers. The teachers being involved in the project all have a rich work experience in Riga English Grammar School . They are open to new changes and challenges in order to have a positive impact on their students and colleagues while passing the newly acquired knowledge. Five teachers of the science and humanities have applied for the courses. They teach Mathematics, English, Social Studies, ICT and Geography both in the primary and secondary school. The participation of all the teachers in the courses is planned for 7 days. The teachers are going to attend the courses from August 1st, 2015 - June 1st, 2016. The course content includes a lecture on Secondary education in England, discussions, work in pairs and groups,visits to secondary schools or vocational colleges, lessons observation, learning English language and other subjects methodology and visits to historical,cultural and scientific places. The organizers offer workshops including brainstorming of concerns, issues and questions, principles of CLIL, roles of language and curriculum in CLIL pedagogy, sources, examples and potential uses of additional curriculum materials, introduction to practical examples of bilingual tasks from one curriculum theme and their comparison with monolingual tasks and task types, assessment issues in CLIL, developing thinking skills, working in two languages etc. We envisage that the participating teachers will return to school with new teaching materials, lesson and thematic plans and ideas how to implement and use CLIL methodology in all age groups of students with different abilities and knowledge of English. We believe they will have greater knowledge of European education systems , organization of learning process and methods, greater understanding of ICT, improvement of English language skills and pedagogical competences. It is expected that all above will result in more effective teaching. Using CLIL methodology in every day work more students will acquire new knowledge, their language and skills of English will improve, they will study new terms, improve cooperative skills,find new friends and have contacts in other European countries using e-Twinning etc. Riga English Grammar School will have an opportunity to become a competitive school in Riga city by using the new CLIL methods. The school will attract more potential students not only from Riga but also from other cities of Latvia. The teachers of language will be motivated to perfect their knowledge of some other subject and teaching methodology, but the teachers of other subjects will perfect their knowledge of language. Attending courses will also provide the teachers with opportunities to establish European school partnerships with British schools and the schools of other course participants and promote the usage of new teaching methods in the educational institution. The benefits of the courses will increase the impact on the European dimension in Riga English Grammar School. It is expected that new contacts will be established with other organizations and taking part in the project will promote the administrative staff of RAG a better understanding of the need for teacher training. The acquired knowledge and experience during the courses will be shared among the teachers of the school and using ‘the example of good practice’ popularized in the wider community through the media.
