Rethinking the role of Englisht-taught Programmes in European Higher Education Area
Start date: Oct 1, 2013,

This one year project will be delivered by the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) in collaboration with the Gesellschaft für empirische Studien bR, Maiworm & Over (GES). Its major output will be a study on the development trends of English-taught programmes (ETPs) in Europe. The project pursues two overall objectives. First, to support policy reforms in the European higher education area by providing new knowledge about ETPs and reassessing their changing role in the new policy context.Second, to increase the visibility of European ETPs in light of growing global competition/cooperation by providing simple facts and figures about ETPs in the European higher education area. Specifically, through a publication of +/-150 pages, it aims:- to describe and analyse the status quo of the ETP landscape in Europe using the data gathered from two large-scale Europe-wide online surveys - to discern possible trends based on the new data and ACA’s two previous ETP studies conducted in 2002 and 2008 - to share best practices of structured cooperation in ETPs gathered through 20 (online) interviews - to provide policy recommendations for the further development of ETPs as an instrument to advance the global agenda of the European higher education area The study will be published as the 22nd edition in ACA’s well-known publication series, the ACA Papers on International Cooperation in Education. Spinning off from the publication will be a book launch to be held in Brussels and two e-brochures on "Quick Facts and Figures of ETPs in Europe" and "Dos and Don'ts in the Provision of ETPs." The core target groups of this project are policy-makers at both the EU and national levels, and leaders of higher education institutions. It is envisaged that the project will subsequently impact on policy discussions and public discussions on the role of ETPs in the European context through its comprehensive, yet targeted, dissemination and exploitation activities.
