RESPONSIVE OPEN LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS
Start date: Feb 1, 2009,
End date: Jan 31, 2013
ROLE is developing a highly responsive learning environment, the elements of which can be combined by the learner to generate new components and functionalities, for self-regulated and social learningROLE's cross-disciplinary innovations will deliver and test prototypes of highly responsive technology-enhanced learning environments, offering breakthrough levels of effectiveness, flexibility, user-control and mass-individualisation. This research also advances the state of the art in human resource management; self-regulated and social learning; psycho-pedagogical theories of adaptive education and educational psychology; service composition and orchestration; and the use of ICT in lifelong learning. ROLE offers adaptivity and personalisation in terms of (1) content and navigation and (2) the entire learning environment and its functionalities. This approach permits individualisation of the components, tools, and functionalities of a learning environment, and their adjustment or replacement by existing web-based software tools. Learning environment elements can be combined to generate (to mashup) new components and functionalities, which can be adapted by individual or collaborating learners to meet their own needs and to enhance the effectiveness of their learning. This empowers each user to generate new tools and functions according to their needs, and can help them to establish a livelier and personally more meaningful learning context and learning experience. ROLE's generic framework uses an open source approach, interoperable across software systems and technology. Hence any tool created by an individual is available from a pool of services and tools to all learners via the internet, no matter which learning environment, operating system, or device they use, and which subject matter they learn. Running for two years so far, the project has established the concept, the technology platform and a widget store. This serves as one of the core components within the ROLE syndication platform and provides services that can be part of the ROLE service bundles. Pedagogical needs in particular are addressed through a number of recommendation services that help users in selecting appropriate content, services and compilations/bundles thereof. This ROLE Showcase Platform displays the software created in the project. It seeks to put learners in the position to build their own technology enhanced learning environment based on their needs and preferences. Most software is web based and can be accessed directly via a web browser from the project website. Instructions and demo logins are also available. In addition, some of the software can be installed in any learning environment.
