REsource innovation Network for European Waste (RENEW)
Start date: Jul 31, 2011, End date: Jun 29, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project aims to build a dynamic trans-national. cross-sector innovation network. transforming the waste sector of North West Europe by improved innovation in the recovery of valuable resources. It will stimulate the collaboration of researchers and SMEs together with public bodies in North West Europe working to develop recovery processes meeting future market needs and will accelerate innovation through a series of targeted support measures in an innovation pipeline which will select the most promising processes and support their development. exploitation and commercialisation. Process innovations will provide a route for sourcing. e.g. platform chemicals. phosphate. heavy metals and other secondary raw materials. thus decreasing the burden for their extraction from the natural environment. Innovations for optimising emerging processing and extraction processes will be demonstrated at pilot-scale using local waste streams. Selected technological processes will be demonstrated and optimised for their output of valuable materials. Technical and business experts will provide advice. training and technical support to process development; process control and analytical support will be available for process optimisation. Business experts will assist with process commercialisation. enabling companies to take advantage of lead markets identified though the project. Overall the project will contribute to transformation of the waste sector in NWE. Achievements: We have made huge advancements in our ability to extract valuable materials from waste. We have exchanged expertise between researchers and SMEs across five regions of North West Europe by creating innovation roadmaps, conducting surveys and carried out technical demonstrations. We also offer an industrial support voucher for SMEs who want to get specialist technical knowledge and equipment. They cover 50 percent of research and innovation and any SME in North West Europe region can apply. We have case studies of good examples for innovation and technical process, with more to come in 2015.As part of the Transnational Action Plan we have been:- Discussing how regions of North West Europe might improve innovation support and facilities to promote innovation in the waste supply chain for resource recovery- Identifying needs and promoting innovation among SMEs in the waste industry- Inviting stakeholders to the ReNEW technical sites to see processes in operation and to learn more about the novel material recovery processes- Running roadshows in various locations around North West Europe to show ReNEW results so far to stakeholders and the general public- Meeting with regional, national and European policy makers to drive the emerging resource recovery agenda
