Research on the development of Sylibum marianum hepatoprotective nanoparticles with high bioavailability (SM-NanoHepat)

The project aims to analyzing the therapeutic effects of the Sylibum marianum plant, also called milk thistle, to find new ways and medicine components for effectively treating liver diseases.Common food traditions (consumption of fats and spices, alcohol consumption) in the cross-border area (Hajdu-Bihar and Arad) have caused a 20% increase of liver diseases (hepatitis, cancer, cirrhosis) compared with other HU and RO counties. Medical statistics made in 2009 showed a EU average of 3.5% for hepatitis C, while in the border there was a doubling of incidence in the population (6%). Classical chemotherapy or other liver treatments (like interferon therapy in C and B hepatitis) are not always effective. Also, their application cause side effects and the total costs of treatment/patient is very high. For example, the annual cost of treatment/patient with hepatitis C is 20,000 euros and 15,000 euros for hepatitis B. In the border region, with a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants, the annual costs for hepatitis C is amounted to 1,200,000,000 euros. In this context, obtaining natural Nano products, as alternatives to classical therapy of liver diseases, with increased bioavailability, becomes a priority in biomedical research. But, to get finally competitive innovative Nano products on pharmaceutical market, is necessary to build up a powerful interdisciplinary research team, an effective partnership between the elite groups of scientists from different fields from border area: chemistry, biology, medicine, pharmacy, with experience in Nano products obtaining through Nano biotechnology and Nano medicine.General objective of the project is to strengthen cross-border co-operation in the field of applicative research of Nano biotechnology and Nano medicine domains.Specific objectives are the following: 1. Obtaining, characterization and encapsulation of Sylibum marianum active bio compounds in cyclodextrins 2. In vitro evaluation of hepatoprotective efficiency of nanoparticles (on hepatocytes cell lines). 3. In vivo evaluation of hepatoprotective efficiency of nanoparticles (on lab mice/rats).Target groups of the research are the project staff, experts, students, including PhD students involved directly in joint project implementation, academic staff (2000 persons), pharmaceutical companies from border area, gastroenterologists doctors and oncologists from cross-border region, patients with liver diseases from the area.
